Calligraphy & Brush Painting Course This 3-week course is all about merging calligraphy with brush painting! It’s not just about writing words; but about embracing the process and enjoying every stroke. We will start with water paper, focusing on basic brush techniques and Zen-inspired artwork. From there, we will move to real ink, painting, and creating balanced compositions. By the end, you’ll have the skills to express both calligraphy and beautiful images like birds and bamboo. Let’s make art that speaks from the heart! Through steady strokes and fluid movements, you’ll discover a meditative approach to creativity. This class is suitable to anyone, whether or not you have attended Yan's previous class Week 1: Water Paper Practice & Basic Drawings Learn the concept of Chinese calligraphy. Learn to draw simple images like birds and bamboo using water paper. Practice common ink painting elements Week 2: Brush, Ink & Painting. Transition from water paper to real ink and rice paper. Practice ink control, pressure variation, and brush movement. Learn to paint basic elements like flower petals, leaves, and bird feathers. Explore how calligraphy and painting share similar techniques Week 3: Drawing & Composition Apply learned techniques to create full compositions.. Focus on spacing, balance, and artistic expression. Combine calligraphy with traditional painting elements to create complete works. • Experiment with different styles, blending writing with images like bamboo, plum blossoms, and landscapes. Course fee DOES NOT include the calligraphy equipment, but Yan will have sets available to buy on the day. The kit will include a writing set, including: 1 storage box, 1 ink-stone, 1 ink stick, 1 ink pad, 1 brush holder, 1 stamp, 1 cleaning bowl, 4 brushes of different sizes, and 1 piece of reusable water practice paper. We will let you know nearer the time of the cost for this Paper specifically for beginners will also be provided. --- "Hi, I’m Yan Mak, and I’m excited to share my passion for Chinese calligraphy with you! I’ve spent years working in art and style direction in Hong Kong, where I contributed to various creative projects such as album covers and music videos. Please note our classes are mostly aimed for adults. Please get in touch to ask if you are unsure. Our classes are non refundable. Due our small class sizes it is very difficult to transfer your booking to a different date. If you cannot attend a class and are able to notify us at least two weeks before the class starts, it may be possible to fit you in on another date but this is not guaranteed so please give us as much notice as possible to increase your chances. T&Cs Terms & Conditions • You can book places on our classes, workshops and events on our website or in person at Bus Stop Studios, 53 London Road, St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex TN37 6AY • Places are booked on a first-come-first-served basis. Full payment is required at the time of booking in order to reserve your place. • Bookings and payments will be confirmed by email. • The materials and tools needed for each class varies, so please refer to the course description but don’t hesitate to contact us with any queries. • If you are unable to attend a class, workshop or event you may send someone else in your place. You must let us know the name of the attendee prior to the class, workshop or event taking place. • Confirmed & paid bookings are not eligible for payment refunds. • You can transfer to another class, workshop or event or receive a credit note if you notify us at least 14 days before the date of the class, workshop or event you are booked on to attend. • In exceptional circumstances, where we may have to cancel one of our advertised classes, workshops or events, you will be offered a full refund. • If a class, workshop or event is cancelled our liability is solely for the cost of the booking fee, not for any other costs you may have incurred such as materials you may have purchased in advance, travel costs or accommodation. • Attendees at our classes, workshops and events are not permitted to use any of our instruction sheets, photography or designs for their own classes or other commercial concerns.
