Service Description

Contemporary Quilted Wall Hanging Course Join our local textiles artist Kasia Hamilton for this 2 part weekend quilting workshop making both a beautiful and practical wall hanging for your home. This workshop will teach you fundamental techniques of contemporary hand quilting (some basic sewing machine knowledge can be useful but not necessary) embracing an informal process that will allow you to create free forms. Kasia approaches quilting as an intuitive process, often inspired by the fabric, environments, travels and is deeply rooted in personal experiences. Following this approach to quilting you will be able to create work that is contemporary, freeform and personal to you. During these two days you will learn: - how to make an abstract quilted textile using various patchwork and stitching technique. - how to construct different layers, stitch it and finish your piece The workshop will equip you with the skills to carry on making your own quilts at home & is designed to suit all skill levels. We ask participants to bring with them: - A selection of fabrics to use for your top patchwork. These can be variety of sizes and textiles scraps or remnants. The best fabric for quilts making are woven cotton and linen fabrics (or mix of these eg. with viscose). It is best to avoid any upholstery weight materials. As a guide when in doubt, shirt weight fabric will work best. You can use fabrics from old clothing giving your work personal touch by incorporating materials that hold memory to you. - Additional one piece of fabric for the backing (approx 60cm x 80cm.). This could be one length of fabric or made up of smaller pieces sewn together. - Any objects, photographs personal to you or artists/designers that inspire you to help inform your work. (optional) - If you have a sewing kit, please bring this along including glasses &/or magnifiers (if needed) All other tools and basic materials will be provided. --- I am Kasia. I work with mixed fibres & natural fabrics creating textile works. I am an interior designer by trade and an Art & Design Lecturer at the University of the Arts London. My textile works highlight my interdisciplinary experience and passion for making. I celebrate the slow process and focus on contemporary representation of traditional craft methods. www.kasiahamilton.com @ kasia_hamilton_textiles --- - Saturday 31st May (10am - 3pm) - Sunday 1st June (11am - 4pm) with one hour for lunch at @Bus Stop Studios
