  • Knit a Pair of Socks Course

    Knit a Pair of Socks Course - A special short course running as part of the Bus Stop Studios Summer School Start now and give as the perfect Christmas gifts! Over three sessions we will cover everything you need to knit a pair of cosy socks, top down with a heel flap and gusset. Including: knitting small circumferences in the round, selecting sock yarn, working a stretchy cast on, knitting a heel flap and turning a heel, picking up stitches and grafting/kitchener stitch. Skills required: participants should be comfortable knitting and purling. Experience of knitting in the round and increasing/decreasing is desirable but not required. Session 1: Introduction and Cuff We will cast on our socks using a stretchy cast on and knit the cuffs. We will discuss different methods for knitting small circumferences in the round and how to select appropriate sock yarn. Towards the end of the session participants will be shown how to knit a heel flap. Session 2: Turning a Heel and picking up gusset stitches Between sessions 1 and 2, participants will complete their leg and heel flap. In this session we will turn our heels, pick up gusset stitches and learn how to decrease for the foot. Session 3: Toes, grafting and finishing We will discuss different methods for knitting toes, and demonstrate how to graft a wedge toe closed. We will also discuss finishing and blocking and caring for hand knit socks, and look at some ‘next step’ sock projects. Participants will be provided with a printed pattern during the first session. They will need to bring: 100g of sock yarn and 2.5mm needles (either double pointed needles, a long circular or flexible double pointed needles). A kit including a skein of The Fibre Co. Amble sock yarn and a set of needles will be available to purchase for £25 prior to the class. --- Harriet is an experienced knitter and teacher and the co-owner of Flock, an online yarn and knitting shop based in St Leonards.   • Botanical Bundle Dyeing Workshop

    Botanical Bundle Dyeing Workshop Join Tara Macdonald to learn the fun process of Natural Bundle Dyeing. We will be using a selection of fresh flowers and botanicals to create incredible patterns and colours onto fabric. You will have the option to use either a silk or organic cotton scarf to make yourself something totally unique to take home with you and wear! Bundle dyeing is a great way to introduce yourself into natural dyeing and working with nature to create colour- the results are always amazing and so satisfying! Tara is an experienced gardener, natural dyer and crafts person. She loves to grow most of her dye plants in her dye garden in Fairlight and creates gorgeous naturally dyed products from her studio in Rye. She loves to share her passion for natural colour and regularly runs workshops for both adults and children. There will be a £15 fee for materials, which includes your choice of scarf, practice pieces, full instructions to take home and LOTS of flowers!   • Woollen Mending Class

    Woollen Mending Class We all have a woollen item that needs mending! Either from general wear and tear or as a result of those pesky moths. Do you have a sweater, hat or pair of gloves or socks that need a new lease of life? Or a treasured piece of knitwear that you don’t want to throw away? Come along and experience the slow art of visible mending for knitwear. During the class we will explore how to mend holes and worn patches using both woven darns and duplicate stitch to create beautiful visible repairs. (We will also show you how to create invisible mends if you’re after a more subtle approach!) All tools and materials for darning will be provided (although participants are very welcome to bring their own). You should bring along a piece of knitwear (jumper, sock, hat, etc.) that you would like to repair or embellish. The techniques we will use are suitable for any knitted fabric (machine or hand-made) and you will leave the class with the skills that you need to continue to breathe new life into your knitwear at home. --- Harriet is an experienced knitter and teacher and the co-owner of Flock, an online yarn and knitting shop based in St Leonards.     SUPER! A superhero-making workshop for 8-11 year olds Join Emma Joliffe for a jam-packed morning creating your own superhero, with unique powers, dreams, fears and of course, enemies. We’ll create a group hero, as well as our own individual characters, writing stories and making a comic strip. The workshop will end with a sharing for families. All activities are dyslexia-friendly (and the workshop is suitable for other neurodivergent children!) The morning will be engaging and fun, stimulating imagination and building confidence. Emma Joliffe is a writer and performer. She also has sixteen years’ experience as drama teacher and LAMDA coach and has helped many children, young people and adults find their voice and tell their story.   • Beginner's Sewing Lessons

    Beginner's Sewing Lessons (even though this class has already started you are still able to join at anytime) A friendly and informal beginners sewing lessons where you will learn from your peers as well as from our highly experienced and passionate teacher, St Leonard's very own Cycling Seamstress, Ness Newman! This fortnightly sewing class is an opportunity to learn the basics of sewing with a machine or give well loved, favourite pieces from your wardrobe that may be damaged or well worn a new lease of life with invisible mending. Each week Ness will teach different ways to mend or alter your own pieces of clothing depending on what is bought in. As well as visible mending, Ness will be able to help and encourage people working on their own sewing projects that may have been going on for a while and ground to a halt! Got a pattern that you've always wanted to make and never had the nerve to start? Bring it along and work it with Ness This class will also be suitable for those hoping to get to grips with the basics of a domestic sewing machine.   • 'Fit For You' Pattern Cutting Part 2

    In this 3 day class you will learn from expert pattern-cutter Emily Howse the core skills of pattern cutting in this second part of her 3 part series 'Fit For You' running over the month of August at Bus Stop Studios. This starter course is suitable for those who have attended Part 1 and for those with some previous experience to basic pattern cutting. Turn your Block into your own design using traditional pattern cutting techniques. yOU Will have the opportunity to turn your basic block into a design of your choice, create the toile and fit the piece correctly. With Emily's expert guidance you will be able to discuss which fabric would be appropriate for your design as well as choose the finishing choices and alterations appropriate to create a one of piece made bespoke for you! Part 2: - Introduction to pattern cutting techniques to turn your block into your design as a group - discussions on which technique will best achieve your design as a group - discussions on seam allowances and which seam allowance to apply to stitch your design effectively, individual discussions - putting pattern cutting techniques and seam allowance discussions to practice and drafting a pattern for your design individual discussions - cutting your calico toile - sewing together your toile - fitting your toile as a group - translating any changes to you pattern from the fitting - discussing appropriate fabrics for your design and any haberdashery that may be needed for part 3 Emily is a graduate of Bath Spa University where she studied Fashion and Textile Design. She has spent the past 17 years working in the high-end word of fashion as both a creative pattern-cutter and seamstress for British heritage brands such as Boudicca and Burberry. Emily has spent the latter part of her career working in higher education at Bucks New University, the Royal School of Needlework and Kingston University as part of the university's Technical Teams Following on from this course you can choose to then continue with part 3 of the 'Fit For You' course running every other weekend in August.     Kid's Half Term Sewing Lesson Bus Stop Studios Kids Sewing class! Join us for this special half term class teaching kids the joys of machine sewing with Ness the Cycling Seamstress This fun morning sewing class will be aimed for younger children aged 7 - 11 (we will be running a teenagers workshop in the afternoon) This a brilliant introduction for kids wanting to learn the core elements of sewing with a domestic sewing machine. No experience necessary!! Ness will teach how to thread the machine including the annoying little bobbin! Each child will be given a pre cut colourful piece to fabric to practice straight lines, turns, curves and stops! Depending on the time they can make a mini tote bag perfect for on the go living!!! If any children have previous experience Ness can teach them further stitches Ness Newman aka the Cycling Seamstress is an experienced seamstress, stylist, designer and Fashion Historian living and working in St Leonards on Sea, Ness works full time teaching sewing and working on private commissions.     Kids Half-Term Knitting Class Calling all young creatives to join us for a half-term knitting session. Knitting isn’t just great for grown ups - it’s excellent for kids too, improving both concentration and fine motor skills and helping creativity to flourish! In this introductory class, participants will start from the very beginning, learning how to make knit stitches while they work on a simple project such as a wristband or phone cosy. Those with some experience are also welcome. Suitable for ages 10+.
