Intro to Blackwork Embroidery: Beginners Workshop Curious about blackwork embroidery & want to try it in a single day? This beginner friendly workshop taught by embroidery tutor Amy Burt introduces you to the core techniques of blackwork, a counted thread style known for its crisp lines, repeating patterns & geometric fills. Blackwork is sometimes also known as Spanish work. It became fashionable in England during the Tudor period, influenced by Spanish textiles & popularised through Catherine of Aragon’s Spanish court. Traditionally stitched in black thread on white linen, blackwork was first used to decorate clothing & household textiles, & has since evolved into a rich embroidery style with endless pattern possibilities. Over the day, you will learn how to work to create neat & even stitches, build patterns using classic motifs & fills. You will be taught a selection of classic blackwork stitches, all worked using DMC stranded cotton on white counted linen thread. Stitches learnt include hexagonal lozenge, tulip stitch, & open zig zag, as well as chain stitch & stem stitch. You will work on a guided design to practise each technique, & learn how to start & finish cleanly so your stitching looks polished. Each technique will be demonstrated & practised, with plenty of time to get comfortable with the method. By the end of the day, you will have a finished sample to take home & the skills to continue blackwork embroidery in your own projects. This workshop is designed for beginners, so no experience is necessary. All materials & tools are provided, including your embroidery hoop, fabric, threads, needles & pattern. All material costs are included in the fee. Amy is a professional hand embroidery artist & trained Royal School of Needlework tutor. She has been teaching for over 10 years & worked as a haute couture embroiderer for McQueen, Erdem, & Ralph & Russo. She contributed embroidery to King Charles III’s Coronation & has exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts. www.ladybembroidery.co.uk Date: Saturday 9 May 2026 Time: 10:30am to 4:30pm Location: Bus Stop Studios, 53 London Road, St Leonards on Sea, TN37 6AY Price: £70 standard / £55 reduced low income rate We offer a reduced rate for those on low incomes.
