Metal Thread: The Core Skills Course with Becky Hogg Ever wondered how the robes worn at Royal coronations, or the lavish fashions of the 17th century, were embroidered? Join hand embroidery artist and tutor Becky Hogg for this inspiring four-part course in metal thread (goldwork) embroidery. Through a sampler, you'll learn traditional techniques and stitches used to create richly textured, visually stunning embroidery. Who is this course for? Ideal for complete beginners, as well as those with some experience wanting to refine their skills. No design or drawing skills needed, a sampler template is provided. What you will learn Over four Friday mornings, you will learn: - Specialist materials and tools used in metal thread embroidery. - Padding techniques for depth and dimension, using felt and soft string. - Couching techniques for securing metal threads, from flexible passing threads to stiffer pearl purl wires. - Cutwork techniques, including chipping and satin stitch, using fine metal coils known as purl. - Working with silk-covered metal threads. Materials You'll work using an embroidery hoop and stand, available to borrow or bring your own. A materials pack is included in the course fee, containing metal threads, padding materials, needles, beeswax & base fabric. Extra stock is available to buy from our shop if you run out. About the tutor Becky Hogg is an accomplished embroidery artist & experienced tutor with a strong love of traditional techniques & their modern applications. Her teaching style is friendly, encouraging & accessible, and she's a regular tutor at Bus Stop Studios. We keep class sizes small to ensure everyone receives plenty of individual support. Early booking is recommended. Keeping classes accessible Like many small businesses, we're seeing rising costs, so we've made a small increase to our course prices. To keep things fair & sustainable, reduced-fee places are now limited rather than open to everyone. Terms & Conditions for Class Bookings Most of our classes are designed for adults. If you are unsure whether a class is suitable, please contact us before booking. Bookings & Payments - Classes, workshops and events can be booked via our website or in person at Bus Stop Studios, 53 London Road, St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex TN37 6AY. - Bookings are first come, first served. - Full payment is required at the time of booking to secure your place. (please see below for payment options) - A booking confirmation will be sent by email once payment has been processed. Pricing & Supported Places - As a small independent business, our class fees help cover running costs, tutor pay, preparation time and associated expenses. - We may offer 1-2 lower income or supported places on selected courses, subject to availability. - These must be requested by email before booking and are offered at our discretion. - If the cost of a longer course feels difficult to manage, please contact us before booking and we may be able to discuss options such as a payment plan. Materials - Materials and tools vary by class. Please check the course description for details. Cancellations & Changes - Bookings are non-refundable. - Transfers are usually not possible due to small class sizes. - With at least 14 days' notice, we may be able to offer a transfer or credit note, subject to availability. - With 7 days' notice, we may be able to offer an alternative date, but this is not guaranteed. -If you cannot attend, you may send someone else in your place. Please let us know their name before the class. Cancellations by Us - If we need to cancel a class, workshop or event, you will receive a full refund. - Our liability is limited to the cost of the class only. Insurance & Copyright - Bus Stop Studios is fully insured for all classes and workshops, and all tutors hold their own Public Liability Insurance. - Course content, handouts, photography and designs are for personal use only and may not be copied, shared or used for teaching or commercial purposes without written permission. Photography - We may occasionally take photographs during classes for marketing or social media. - We will always ask permission before taking or using identifiable images. - Please let us know in advance if you have any concerns about photography.
